HI! I’m Karla.

Designers handle complex ideas while document controllers take care of the simple items that often get overlooked.

As a document control specialist with over 20 years of industry experience, I have worked on many of Seattle’s largest infrastructure projects for Sound Transit, WSDOT, and King County.

My career in archiving was launched at the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum in Bristol, England. Working in the museum library enabled me to understand how important it is to invest in record management.

I began working as an archivist in Seattle on architectural and engineering projects. Throughout my tenure, I acquired extensive knowledge of managing documentation and safeguarding project information.

Good document control comes with listening to the client and implementing a document control management plan that will sustain and contribute to the project’s success.

“I am highly pleased to be able to offer my personal endorsement to Karla Butler and Dossier. I have known Karla for nearly 20 years, and she is the first person I think of for document control on a complex project.

She has the technical skills, knowledge, and experience to make document control run smoothly and efficiently and has consistently demonstrated that on some of the highest-profile projects in the Northwest for clients such as Sound Transit, Washington State Department of Transportation, and King County.

More important are Karla‘s team building, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Is Document

Control Needed?

Ineffective file management and poor documentation can lead to litigation issues and additional design costs. All design teams should have a document control specialist to ensure that all files are named consistently, stored on the project site, and retained for future reference.

The ideal document control specialist meets with each client, prepares a document control plan based on the project’s scope of work, which creates consistency throughout the project duration.
