In today’s market for transportation design projects, a document controller will save you time, ensure that your files are managed efficiently, and continuously maintain your documents throughout the lifespan of your project.
HI! WE’RE DOSSIER.
Designers handle complex ideas while document controllers take care of the simple items that often get overlooked.
As document control specialists with over 20 years of industry experience, we have worked on many of Seattle’s largest infrastructure projects for Sound Transit, WSDOT, and King County.
Our story began at the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum in Bristol, England, where our founder, Karla Butler (pictured here, in the center), worked in the museum library. This experience enabled her to understand how important it is to invest in good record management and launched her career in archiving.
Karla began working as an archivist in Seattle on architectural and engineering projects. Throughout her tenure, she acquired extensive knowledge of managing documentation and safeguarding project information.
She launched Dossier in 2022 as a one-person company, and within 2 years, tripled her Document Control team and added Operations and Marketing functions to support and manage the company’s growth.
At Dossier, our team knows that good document control is rooted in actively listening to our clients and implementing cohesive document control management plans that will sustain and contribute to every project’s success.

“I am highly pleased to be able to offer my personal endorsement to Karla Butler and Dossier. I have known Karla for nearly 20 years, and she is the first person I think of for document control on a complex project.
She has the technical skills, knowledge, and experience to make document control run smoothly and efficiently and has consistently demonstrated that on some of the highest-profile projects in the Northwest for clients such as Sound Transit, Washington State Department of Transportation, and King County.
More important are Karla‘s team building, communication, and interpersonal skills.“

Is Document
Control Needed?
Ineffective file management and poor documentation can lead to litigation issues and additional design costs. All design teams should have a document control specialist to ensure that all files are named consistently, stored on the project site, and retained for future reference.
The ideal document control specialist meets with each client, prepares a document control plan based on the project’s scope of work, which creates consistency throughout the project duration.
